We couldn't let the first birthday of Dear Ewe go by without a bit of anniversary cake!


We think that our cute handmade cake is the perfect way to say Happy Birthday to Ewe!


Amigurumi patterns are always fun to make, and crochet food items are particularly entertaining to hook up. Now you can celebrate birthdays forever with a calorie free confectionery dessert that everyone will love.

This amigurumi cake could make a wonderful centrepiece for someone's special day with instructions on how to make additional removable candles it can be used every year!

Cake for Ewe Crochet Pattern


Yarn:

  • 10g / 15m metres Chocolate (Shade 507)

  • 25g / 63 metres Root Beer (Shade 157)

  • 10g / 15m metres Old Lace (Shade 130)

  • 1g / 1.5m of Primrose (Shade 522)

  • 1g / 1.5m metres Snow White (Shade 106)

4ply / yarn weight #3 Scheepjes Catona used in photos:


Hook: 3 mm (US size C/2)


You will also need:

  • 10.6cm (4inch) diameter styrofoam cake dummy (or toy filler)

  • Stitch markers

  • A yarn needle

  • Small amount of toy filler

  • Cocktail stick (optional)

Gauge: 5dc and 3PF = 2.5cm / 1inch

Obtaining the correct gauge is not critical to this project but if your gauge does not match then your finished item will be a different size. Pattern will work in other hooks and yarns though finished size will be different.


Finished Size: 6.8cm (2.7 inches ) high.10.6cm (4 inch ) diameter

STITCH GUIDANCE

Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook in st indicated, yarn over and draw through all loops.

Back Loop Only (BLO): Work in the back loop of stitch as indicated.

Front Loop Only (FLO): Work in the front loop of stitch as indicated.

Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook in st indicated and draw up a loop (two loops on hook), yarn over, draw through both loops on hook.

Double crochet two together (dc2tog): Insert hook in st indicated and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through three loops on hook.

Alternating double crochet: (Alt.dc) This stitch is worked exactly like a normal dc but you work the stitches in the back and front loops; alternating from one to the other as you work.

Treble (tr): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st and pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops on hook.

Popcorn Stitch (4PC): Work 4 tr in indicated st, remove hook completely, insert hook in 1st tr (1st tr of the 4), insert hook in loop that you just removed your hook from (4th tr of the 4), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.


PATTERN NOTES

Using a stitch marker: Many parts of the are worked without joining in continuous rnds - place the stitch marker in the top of the first st to mark start of rnd.


PATTERN

CAKE TOP

Notes: Check gauge of rnds 1 - 9 as you go to ensure that the cake top will fit over your styrofoam cake dummy.

Rnd 1: With Chocolate either make a magic ring (adjustable ring) to start or 2ch, work 6dc into the ring / 2nd ch from hook, use tail yarn to tighten centre ring closed if necessary (6sts).

Rnd 2: [2dc] in each st around. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [1dc, 2dc] to end. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: [1dc in the next two sts, 2dc] to end. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: [1dc in the next three sts, 2dc] to end. (30 sts)

Rnd 6: [1dc in the next four sts, 2dc] to end. (36 sts)

Rnd 7: [1dc in the next five sts, 2dc] to end. (42 sts)

Rnd 8: [1dc in the next six sts, 2dc] to end. (48 sts)

Rnd 9: 1dc in 3sts, 2dc, [1dc in the next seven sts, 2dc] until last 4sts, 1dc to end. (54 sts)

Rnd 10: [1dc in the next eight sts, 2dc] to end. (60 sts)

Rnd 11: 1dc in 4sts, 2dc, [1dc in the next nine sts, 2dc] until last 5sts, 1dc to end. (66 sts)

Fasten off Chocolate and weave in ends.


CAKE SIDE

Rnd 12: Attach Root Beer with a sl st to the BLO of any st, ch2 (does not count as st), 4PC in same st as beginning ch2, sl st to next st, [4PC, sl st to next st] to end. (33 PC and 33 sl st / 66 sts)

Rnd 13: Sl st to the next FLO; 1dc in each st (including top of PC and sl st) around until end.

Rnds 14—30: Sl st to the next FLO; 1Alt.dc in each st around until end.

Rnd 31: Ch2 (does not count as st), 4PC in same st as beginning ch2, sl st to next st, [4PC, sl st to next st]. (33 PC and 33 sl st / 66 sts)

Fasten off Root Beer and weave in ends.


CAKE BOTTOM

Rnds 1-11: With Chocolate repeat rnds 1—9 of CAKE TOP.

MAKING UP

Slip the cake cover you have made onto your styrofoam cake dummy.

Line up the CAKE BOTTOM with the cake sides and sew into place to secure the styrofoam cake dummy inside.


CANDLE

Rnd 1: With Snow White either make a magic ring (adjustable ring) to start or 2ch, work 5dc into the ring / 2nd ch from hook, use tail yarn to tighten centre ring closed if necessary (5sts).

Rnd 2: [2dc] to end. (10 sts)

Rnd 3: BLO; 1dc in each st around until end.

Rnds 4—17: 1dc in each st around until end.

Stuff firmly with toy filler

Rnd 18: BLO; [dc2tog] to end. (5 sts)

Fasten off and using the yarn tail sew up the remaining five sts and weave in ends.


FLAME

Rnd 1: With Primrose either make a magic ring (adjustable ring) to start or 2ch, work 7dc into the ring / 2nd ch from hook, use tail yarn to tighten centre ring closed if necessary, sl st to the top of first st to join (7sts).

Rnd 2: Ch3, 1dc in the 3rd ch from hook, sl st to the next st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.


MAKING UP

Attach the flame to the top of the candle


Optional (if using styrofoam base) Add a cocktail stick in the bottom of the candle so that you can move the candle around on the cake, or add more candles if required.


OR you can sew the candle to the middle of the cake if using toy filler.
